🔼 Familiar Foes. The UTSA men’s tennis team (4-5) heads east to Florida, taking on back-to-back Sunshine State foes this weekend with Miami [FL] (6-2) and Florida Atlantic on the road slate. Having already played nine matches away from home to start the season, the Roadrunners will face the Hurricanes on Friday in Coral Gables before heading up I-95 to meet the Owls in Boca Raton on Sunday morning.
UTSA at Miami is set for 3 p.m. CST on Friday, Feb. 23, at Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables. The match will be streamed live on Miami’s Playsight, with UM Athletics also providing live results.
UTSA at Florida Atlantic will be played at 10 a.m. CST on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center in Boca Raton. There will be no live stream of the match, but FAU Athletics will provide live results.
With this weekend hemming up an 11-match road stretch to open the season, UTSA will finally take the court at home at the UTSA Tennis Center next week, hosting Utah State in the home opener on March 1, then closing out the week hosting UT Arlington on Sunday, March 3.
🔼 Houston, We Have No Problem. The UTSA women’s tennis team heads to Houston for a pair of matches this weekend, including a Friday match against the Houston Cougars at 1 p.m. and a Saturday match against the Rice Owls at 11 a.m.
UTSA has placed No. 61 in the ITA Rankings this week – the program’s highest ranking ever and first ranking since 2003. The Roadrunners hold a 6-1 record just over a month into the season.
Houston has a 1-3 record so far this season, following a 4-2 loss to Louisiana Tech on Feb. 12. Rice is 2-5 on the season after a 7-0 loss to Texas A&M on Feb. 18.
The Roadrunners head to Denton, Texas, for a trio of matches next weekend. UTSA will face North Texas on March 2 at 11 AM CST before a couple of neutral site matches on March 3 against Tyler JC at 9 a.m. and Cowley CC at 1 p.m.
🔼 The Need…The Need For Speed. The UTSA men’s and women’s track & field teams are headed to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete this weekend in the program’s first appearance at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. The league’s championship meet is slated to run from today (Friday, Feb. 23) through tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 24) at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Roadrunners are coming off a week without competition following a triple-event weekend all across the country two weeks ago, as UTSA set two international records and five school records, quickly rising the rankings among individual conference performers.
This weekend’s conference event will stack the Roadrunners up against the 11 men’s teams and 14 women’s teams in the AAC, with the competition kicking off today with the women’s pentathlon at 9 a.m., followed closely by the first four events of the men’s heptathlon at 11 a.m.
NCAA qualifiers will then move on to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for March 8-9 at The Track at New Balance in Boston, Mass. The Outdoor season is right around the corner, with competition opening for the Roadrunners at home within the Park West Athletics Complex, with UTSA hosting the UTSA Invitational from March 15 to March 16.
🔼 The Wrong Side of the Bulls Barnburner. The UTSA men’s basketball team (8-19, 2-12 AAC) came within millimeters of the biggest upset of the season on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center, nearly upending South Florida's 11-game winning streak. The Roadrunners pulled ahead of the Bulls (20-5, 13-1 AAC) until 1:40 remained on the clock and had a game-winning opportunity with 21 seconds remaining. However, Jordan Ivy-Curry’s three from the wing was just off the mark, and a foul call set the Bulls to squeak out the 66-61 win over the Roadrunners.
UTSA will close out the week in Denton for a Saturday, Feb. 24 matchup at North Texas, followed by a rematch with Tulsa on Greek Night at The Convo on Feb. 28. and a road swing to meet SMU on March 2.
