UTSA's Ruger Riojas has been added to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watchlist

Good morning, Roadrunners Fam. Sophomore UTSA baseball player Ruger Riojas has been added to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watchlist. Riojas ranks sixth in the nation with seven victories and 28th in the nation with six saves.

Founded in 1962, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. 59 of the nation’s top relievers were named to the midseason watchlist, including four from the American Athletic Conference.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 No Stroke of Luck. UTSA senior Camryn Carreon and sophomore Daniela Abonce have earned berths to the NCAA Bryan Regional, which will be hosted by Texas A&M on May 6-8 at Traditions Club. This marks the first time two Roadrunners have received an invitation to compete as individuals in an NCAA Regional in the same year.

Carreon and Abonce, who were both named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team earlier this week, are two of six individuals chosen to play in the Bryan Regional along with 12 teams. Carreon will be the No. 2-seeded individual in her fourth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, and Abonce is the 5-seed for her first NCAA Regional.

🔼 The Claunch Launch. New UTSA men’s basketball coach Austin Claunch officially announced four members of his inaugural staff with proven skills in recruiting, roster development, and relationship building. Nick Bowman, Joey Brooks, Trevor DeLoach, and Joseph Jones have been named assistant coaches to begin the new era of Roadrunners basketball.

“Throughout this process, there was a lot of interest and excitement due to the rising trajectory of every aspect of the UTSA athletics program,” Claunch said.

Q: Why did you choose UTSA? 

Ida Breigan: "I chose UTSA because it really seemed like the best fit for me. They have a great coaching staff, I get to live with two other Norwegians, the academics are solid, and the warm weather is a big plus." 

Q: Who is your sports hero? 

Ida Breigan: "Allyson Felix is my sports hero because of her incredible achievements in track and how much she has done for women in sports. She's a true inspiration, showing what dedication and hard work can lead to."

🔼 Space City Series. The UTSA baseball team heads to Houston to face the Rice Owls in a three-game series in American Athletic Conference play this weekend. The series opens tonight at 6:30 PM CST, before game two on Saturday is set for 2 PM. and the series concludes at 1 PM on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

UTSA has won all five of its conference series thus far, picking up a big series win against conference favorite and then-No. 10 ECU, a road series sweep over 2023 AAC Tournament champion Tulane, a home series win against 2023 C-USA Tournament champion Charlotte, a road series win over Memphis, and most recently, a home series win over UAB.

🔼 A Veep to Keep. UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos will be honored by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce on May 16 as part of its Tribute to Women Business Leaders awards. 

Campos will be recognized with the Promise Award, which honors an exceptional leader who has made a significant impact on business and the community in a short span of time in San Antonio. The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s Tribute to Women Business Leaders will take place May 16 at 11 AM CST at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

🔼 Annie, Get Your Glove. The UTSA softball team will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a three-game American Athletic Conference series against Tulsa, which will be played Friday through Sunday. The ‘Runners are fresh off a 7-6 midweek victory over UIW, in which senior Erykah Guerrero, redshirt freshman Madi Hays, junior Jaylen Prichard, and redshirt freshman Kylie Forney all hit home runs.

Game One between the Roadrunners (13-37, 3-18 The American) and the Golden Hurricane (27-18, 12-9 The American) will take place tonight at 5 PM CST ahead of game two on Saturday at 1 PM and game three on Sunday at 1 PM.

🔼 Austin Power. This is the final regular season weekend of the 2023-24 Track & Field season for the UTSA Roadrunners, who are traveling a large squad for competition at the Texas Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Austin. UTSA totaled eight top-five finishes in last year’s Texas Invitational.

The Roadrunners will see 45 athletes in action across the two-day meet at the home of the Texas Longhorns, marking the second UTSA visit to the state capital this season and the second consecutive year appearing in this meet.
