UTSA head MBB coach Steve Henson partakes in Suits and Sneakers for Cancer at tonight's game

🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. It’s a big game on the court for men’s basketball this evening, but it has an even bigger purpose for UTSA head coach Steve Henson—Suits and Sneakers for Cancer as a part of Coaches Vs. Cancer.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers coaches and communities to join the fight against cancer.

Check the sidelines all week for your favorite college basketball coaches, including Coach Henson, who’s suiting up in honor of his dad, sporting their best sneakers to show their support for this critical mission.

🔼 By Leaps and Bounds. UTSA freshman long jumper Ida Breigan has been named the AAC’s Field Co-Athlete of the Week – a first for her and for the Roadrunners program in their first year in the league.

Performing in her first collegiate competition and the first meet of UTSA’s indoor season, Breigan blew the competition away at the Lumberjack Team Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz., not only setting the school record but also a new AAC all-time mark in the long jump with her event-winning third leap of 6.47m (21-2.75 ft.).

In addition, her mark registered as the No. 3 NCAA jump at the time and fifth this season as of January 23. Her jump also set a new Norwegian U23 record, coming up just 4 cm (1.5748 in.) short of the overall Norwegian indoor record set in 1967.

The Roadrunners are heading to Houston this weekend for two days of action at the University of Houston’s Robert Platt Invitational, held Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27, at UH’s Yeoman Fieldhouse.

🔼 A Fresh Perspective. The American Athletic Conference announced its weekly awards on Monday, with Aysia Proctor, representing UTSA women's basketball, as the league's Freshman of the Week

Proctor scored 19 points with eight rebounds in a 65-42 victory over defending champions South Florida before dropping nine and eight rebounds against UAB. She went 10-for-24 from the field, including 5-for-10 from beyond the arc.

UTSA will be back in action on Saturday when they meet SMU in Dallas, Texas. The game will tip off at 2 PM CST inside the Moody Center.

🔼 A Rousing ‘Runners Roster. UTSA head coach Karen Aston has officially inked three student-athletes for the 2023-24 recruiting class as Mia HammondsTaylor Ross, and Damara Allen all join in the early signing period.

“What a great day to be a Roadrunner!” said Aston on signing day. “I am so thrilled with this signing class. I can't thank my staff for their tireless work and commitment to bringing in players that will blend in with our culture and make us a better program. Also, a huge thanks to our current players. They are the ones that sell our program the best!”

Read the full article for more on the incredible accomplishments of these athletes, as well as what Aston says about how each will contribute.

🔼 Today in Tennis. Following the weather-related cancelation of Sunday’s match in San Antonio between UTSA men’s tennis and UT Rio Grande Valley, the teams have agreed to play today in Edinburg, Texas. Set for a 12 PM CST first serve at Orville I. Cox Tennis Center, UTSA adds its 11th match away from San Antonio.

The next stop for the Roadrunners after traveling to face the Vaqueros is the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Austin at the Texas Tennis Center. UTSA is scheduled to face No. 3 Texas on Friday, Jan. 27, followed on Saturday, Jan. 28, by a meeting with either Oklahoma State or Utah.

🔼 Passport Stamps Incoming. On Monday, UTSA volleyball head coach Carol Price-Torok announced the program will embark on a European Tour spanning 10 Days and five cities in May of 2024. Donations for the trip are being accepted at the following link: raf.utsa.edu/volleyball.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to continue to train and take a trip of this caliber,” said coach Price-Torok on the prospects of the trip. “Our players will gain international volleyball experience as well as continue to increase team dynamics through enriching cultural experiences.”

The Roadrunners will visit and play matches in Budapest, Maribor, Florence, Venice, and Rome, interwoven with cultural stops along the way.

This will mark the second European Tour in program history, as the team last ventured across the pond in 2016, visiting Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Italy in what served as an enriching experience for the student-athletes both on and off the court.

🔼 Runners Go Bold Biz. As part of its robust Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) program for student-athletes, UTSA Athletics has partnered with San Antonio-based Locker Room Finance to provide student-athletes financial literacy education.

“We are committed to supporting our student-athletes with the best resources possible in order to maximize their NIL opportunities,” UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. “Financial literacy is an incredibly important component of our NIL education program, and we look forward to this collaboration with Locker Room Finance.”

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Idaro Udo

Idara Udo claimed this award on Dec. 6, 2023, following a 15-point, nine-rebound performance against Seattle U. This marks the first occasion since the 2019-20 campaign in which multiple ‘Runners claimed a league Freshman of the Week award, as Mikayla Woods and Adryana Quezada both accomplished the feat in Conference-USA.

🤙🏼 Have a great Wednesday, y’all!
