Brew-1-0 2/19: 'Runners Take the High Road

WBB once again took down first-place North Texas with a 66-63 road victory inside The Super Pit

🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. The UTSA women's basketball team once again took down first-place North Texas, this time working a 66-63 road victory inside The Super Pit. 29 points from senior Jordyn Jenkins helped secure the squad's fourth win over the team at the top of the American Athletic Conference standings.

The Roadrunners (13-11, 7-6 The American) bested the Mean Green (19-6, 9-4), as Jenkins shot 11-for-17 from the field, collected four rebounds, and swiped three steals.

Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman flirted with a double-double to the tune of nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Aysia Proctor poured in 16 points, including four triples.

UTSA will head back to the Convocation Center, as they are set to face Temple, with a 6:30 PM CST tipoff on Thursday in the squad's annual Black History Month game.

🔼 Splitting the Difference. The UTSA Baseball team battled through a back-and-forth battle with UT Arlington in the series finale but fell by 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field, splitting the four-game series after winning both games of a doubleheader yesterday.

QUICK HITS

·      Senior Ty Tilson led the Roadrunners with a pair of hits, one RBI and one double.

·      Redshirt sophomore Braden Davis earned the start and kept the Mavericks scoreless in 1.0 IP.

·      Senior Daniel Garza struck out four batters in 4.2 innings pitched.

·      Senior Drake Smith closed out the game, allowing no runs on no hits and striking out one in the final frame.

The Roadrunners are set to face Tarleton in Stephenville, Texas, on Tuesday at 4 PM CST.

🔼 V is for Vann’s Victories. The UTSA softball team tasted victory for the first time under the direction of head coach Vann Stuedeman on Saturday, as they took down Northwestern State, 5-1, before besting Massachusetts, 3-2 on the final day of the Houston Classic at the Cougar Softball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (2-8, 0-0 The American) worked a pair of wins, as junior Camryn Robillard went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a home run against the Demons, and senior Jamie Gilbert breezed past the Minutewomen tossing a complete game with a career-high 10 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Roadrunners will next do battle in College Station, Texas, where they'll meet Southeastern Louisana, Kansas, St. Thomas (MN), North Dakota State, and Texas A&M as a part of the Texas A&M-Invitational. The event will last from Thursday through Sunday, and UTSA will participate in six games.

🔼 He’s On the Ball. On Friday, head UTSA volleyball coach Carol Price-Torok announced the hiring of Drew Davis, who will join the squad as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator after spending six seasons in a similar role at North Dakota State.

“Drew will be a perfect fit, and his knowledge and passion for the game will take our team to new heights,” said Price-Torok. “He will be an integral member of the staff, and his expertise on the recruiting trail will help us continue to grow and put UTSA volleyball on the map.”

Davis is coming off the heels of an 18-11 season at NDSU, where he's helped build their program into one of the Summit League's best. Among his highlights in Fargo, Davis helped the Bison to their first-ever appearance in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in 2022, when the team went 21-12 and ranked seventh nationally in kills (1,759) and 10th in assists (1,615).

🔼 Continuing to the Convo. Despite a strong opening half at the Liacouras Center on Sunday, the momentum swung against the Roadrunners in the second half of the UTSA men’s basketball (8-18, 2-11 AAC) game at Temple (9-17, 2-11 AAC). While UTSA earned a seven-point halftime lead, the Owls outscored the Roadrunners by 13 in the next 20 minutes to edge out an 83-77 win, snapping a 10-game losing skid for the Owls.

After two games out of the region, UTSA returns to the Lone Star State and back to action on Wednesday against AAC-leading South Florida at the Convocation Center on Feb. 21 in the Roadrunners’ Black History Month Game. UTSA then travels to Denton for a Saturday, Feb. 24, matchup at North Texas.
