🔼 It’s a Hardwood Life. PJ Carter scored 19 of a career night’s effort in the first half to give the UTSA men’s basketball team (8-17, 2-10 AAC) a modest two-point halftime deficit at the American Athletic Conference’s No. 2 Charlotte (16-8, 10-2 AAC). The Roadrunners battled with the 49ers throughout Thursday night’s rematch at Halton Arena, trimming the game to a single possession twice in the final 10 minutes and making it a four-point game with just two minutes remaining, but the 49ers held on for the 79-70 win over the Roadrunners.
The double-game road swing continues for the Roadrunners into the weekend, making the direct move to Philadelphia for a Sunday, Feb. 18 matchup at Temple in The Liacouras Center.
🔼 Kroll and His Warrior Queens. The UTSA women’s tennis team travels to Las Vegas this weekend, going head-to-head with the Kansas City Roos on Friday and the UNLV Rebels on Saturday – both at 10 a.m. PT/12 p.m. CT at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Roadrunners have held a 5-0 record through the start of the season, the best start under head coach Ki Kroll. UTSA is coming off a hard-fought 4-1 win over Southland powerhouse Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, clinched by freshman Vittoria Baccino. UTSA has continued to dominate in doubles action, earning a 12-1 record to go along with a 22-6 singles advantage.
The Roadrunners return to the Lone Star State, heading to Houston next weekend to face the Houston Cougars on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. CT and the Rice Owls on Feb. 24 at 11 a.m.
🔼 She Blinded Us With Science. When UTSA volleyball player Mia Soerensen suffered a concussion in the fifth grade, it turned out to be a life-changing experience that would forever shape her path.
Soerensen, a neuroscience major in the UTSA College of Sciences, had to travel several hours from her hometown of Meadville, Pa., for treatment and rehabilitation with her neurosurgeon. That ordeal would inspire Soerensen’s academic and career interests.
“I had a pretty traumatizing concussion, and I had to do a lot of rehabilitation for that,” Soerensen said. “It was quite the hike, but she was one of the best doctors I’ve ever had in my life. I was like, ‘I want to be her.’ That was my moment of inspiration, so now I’m on this path.”
Soerensen is confident this isn’t just a hobby or a phase, saying, “This is the one thing in my life that I’ve been passionate about for so long.”
This passion led to her transfer from Kent State to UTSA, as Soerensen was looking for a home that featured the best of both worlds – a high-level volleyball program and a top academic program for neuroscience.
Read the full feature on Soerensen for more on how she balances her academics with volleyball, her specific studies within the field, and how her message of positive self-talk has impacted her teammates.
🔼 The Wind Shifted. Despite five different members of the UTSA women's basketball team scoring in double-figures, the squad fell to a potent Tulsa team 74-70 in American Athletic Conference action inside the Reynolds Center on Wednesday.
The Roadrunners (12-11, 6-6 The American) suffered a defeat at the hands of the Golden Hurricane (18-7, 8-4 The American) in what represented the first time in a full calendar year that UTSA saw this many score over 10 points, with five accomplishing the feat on Feb. 2, 2023, against Western Kentucky.
The Roadrunners will now head to Denton, Texas, with a Sunday matchup against North Texas on the docket at 2:00 PM CST inside The Super Pit.
🔼 The Eagle Has Landed. Camryn Carreon registered her 17th career top-10 finish to help lead the UTSA women’s golf team to ninth place at the Nexus Collegiate, which wrapped up Wednesday at Albany Golf Club (par 72/6,544 yards).
Carreon entered the final round with a share of 20th place after opening with a 78-71—149 on Monday before moving into a tie for seventh thanks to a 3-under-par 69 that closed out a 2-over 218. The 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional champion recorded four birdies as well as an eagle on the 309-yard, par-4 14th hole en route to logging the tournament’s low score of the day and her 24th career sub-70 scorecard.
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Feb. 26-27 when they compete in the Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston.
🔼 2-1-0kerrr. UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Lisa Campos, joins hoopers Blessing Adesipe and Isaiah Wyatt on the latest episode of 210vertime.
Dr. Campos talks about her own extensive athletics experiences, saying basketball was her best sport, although she says she is “five-foot-nothing.”
You’re going to watch this if for no other reason than to find out what sport sent her to state despite her, ahem, somewhat short stature!
