Brew-1-0 8/26: Pittman's Pivotal Moment

UTSA Soccer's defeat over St. Mary's on Sunday gave Coach Pittman his 100th win

🤙The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning, Roadrunners Fam. Taking on its second in-town opponent of the 2024 season in their second game at the Park West Athletics Complex, UTSA (3-1) put away St. Mary’s on Sunday night, 1-0, delivering head coach Derek Pittman’s 100th career win in the process.

Following the game, Pittman was recognized for the career milestone, with Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos and Deputy Athletic Director Brad Smith joining the Pittman family on the field to present him with a ceremonial ball.

"I’m very grateful and blessed to have coached alongside some incredible assistant coaches,” Coach Pittman said. “These 100 wins don't happen without their effort and the commitment of all the hard-working players I've been fortunate to coach over the years."

🔼 Getting Centered. As Greg Luca of the San Antonio Express-News writes, “Feeling out his role as an incoming transfer at UTSA, center CJ James said he ‘kind of lost myself in the process’ this spring, focusing more on his own aims rather than integrating with his new teammates.

“He held the top spot on New Mexico’s depth chart for two years before leaving the program amid a coaching change, and he didn’t want to take a back seat with the Roadrunners.

“‘I got so obsessed with just trying to get that starting spot, I didn’t realize I was kind of a cancer to the team. But I had such good role models, just to pull me back in.’

“Leaning on coach Jeff Traylor and offensive line coach Kurt Traylor, James found a new direction, ‘pouring more into my teammates and less into myself.’

“By the time UTSA’s spring game arrived, James was the starting center. And as the Roadrunners wind down their first preseason camp this week, James has carved a role as a leader on the offensive line, becoming only the second newcomer during Traylor’s tenure to be voted worthy of a single-digit jersey as an embodiment of the program’s core values.”

🤙 ONE BIG THING

UTSA-Made. It’s gotta be surreal for a college football coach to see one, let alone two, former players battling it out in the NFL preseason as Joshua Cephus (Jaguars) and Rashad Wisdom (Buccaneers) recently did.

Either way, the ‘Runners win!
