Sophomore Ruger Riojas named the AAC Pitcher of the Week

Good morning. Sophomore Ruger Riojas of the UTSA baseball team has been named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. Junior outfielder Mason Lytle was also named to the weekly five-person honor roll.

This is Riojas's first weekly conference honor. He was a key component of the Roadrunners' upset series victory over No. 10 East Carolina to open conference play. Riojas closed out the weekend series opener and finale, earning his second and third saves of the season.

🔼 Bear Witness. The UTSA baseball team defeated the Big 12’s Baylor Bears by 9-7 on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas. Caleb Hill led the team, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Two of his three hits were doubles, tied for the most doubles in a game this season. Mason Lytle also had a 3-for-5 performance with two runs, an RBI, and one double. Tye Odom’s three stolen bases are the most on the team this season.

The Roadrunners travel to New Orleans to face Tulane in a three-game conference series, opening it up on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Game two is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m., and the series finale is Sunday at 12 p.m.

🔼 Tossing Out Some Fun News. UTSA Athletics and UTSA Sports Properties announced Monday a new Kahlig Auto Group 1K for $10K Promotion, which will take place at five home baseball and softball games this season. The first opportunity to participate is at Saturday’s softball game vs. Memphis. 
 
Fans can register at the marketing table at each of the designated games. One fan will be chosen at random to participate. That fan gets three tosses at a hole in a target from the pitching rubber. If all three tosses go in, the fan will win $10,000. 

🔼 Run With It. With six athletes ranked in the top 20 of their respective events, the UTSA men's outdoor Track & Field team made an impressive debut in the Top-25 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Outdoor rankings.

🔼 A Strong Role Model. UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos was honored on Monday by Girls Inc. of San Antonio at its 19th annual Strong, Smart and Bold Luncheon.

The Smart, Strong and Bold Luncheon honors strong female role models who demonstrate courage, grit and persistence to overcome challenges and thrive. Campos is being recognized as the Strong Honoree.

🔼 A Triumphant Tennis Tuesday. After an absolute dogfight in a midweek match, the UTSA men’s tennis team (9-8) earned another ranked win with a 4-0 sweep over the visiting No. 62 Oregon Ducks (11-8) at the UTSA Tennis Center.

“We had some adversity to overcome today, and the guys responded very well, said Coach Sergey Avdeyev. “Everyone was so locked in during singles. I am very proud of the effort and focus we played today with!”

🔼 Blip on the Bases. Despite a sophomore Madi Hays home run, the UTSA softball team suffered a 4-2 setback at the hands of Lamar on Tuesday in nonconference action at Roadrunner Field. Hays had a 2-for-3 afternoon with an RBI, while junior Sophie Campbell recorded a double. Additionally, senior Taylor Jensen, freshman Taryn Madlock, and sophomore Caton Letbetter all logged hits for the squad. 

UTSA will look to bounce back with a three-game American Athletic Conference showdown against Memphis on the docket at Roadrunner Field from Thursday through Saturday.

The Net Effect. A big shoutout to Hailey Atwood and Sidney Love for making the CSC Academic All-District Team! The duo are the third and fourth selections in program history, and this is the first time a Roadrunner was picked since Ryba Pawlaczyk in the 2008-09 campaign.

The pair are now on the ballot for CSC Academic All-America, with that team set to be announced on Tuesday, April 16.

Answer: On the week, Ruger Riojas picked up six strikeouts.

In Sunday’s series finale, Riojas entered the game with the tying run at the plate and no outs in the eighth inning. He was able to power through the final two frames while picking up a couple of strikeouts. On the week, he also earned two saves, picked up a 0.00 ERA and kept opposing batters to a .111 batting average.
