UTSA Women’s Golf travels to Boca Raton, Florida, to open the spring season at the Paradise Invitational

🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. The UTSA women’s golf team will travel to Boca Raton, Florida, to open the spring season at the Paradise Invitational, which will be held Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 5-6, at Osprey Point Golf Club (par 72/6, 204 yards)—marking their third appearance in this event.

The Roadrunners will compete against BYU, Denver, East Carolina, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Indiana, Iowa, Notre Dame, Rutgers, South Florida, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with 7 AM CST starts scheduled for both days.

UTSA is coming off a fall campaign that featured three top-four finishes, including a pair of third-place showings at the Sam Golden Invitational, where they fired a program-record 27-under-par 837 (282-275-280).

🔼 Peanuts and Cracker Jack…and Tickets. The season hasn't even started, and UTSA baseball season ticket records are already being broken.

🔼 The Winds of Change. The UTSA women’s tennis team has canceled today’s match against Sam Houston, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 4.

The match was delayed to 3 p.m. to avoid the weather conditions, but persisting strong winds ultimately forced the cancellation. The Roadrunners and Bearkats plan to reschedule the match for later in the season.

It would have been on the heels of the Roadrunners having defeated crosstown rival UIW, 6-1, on Saturday. With that match, UTSA improved to an impressive 4-0 record – the best start for the squad under head coach Ki Kroll.

The Roadrunners host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 2 PM CST at the UTSA Tennis Center.

🔼 A Wave of Regret. The UTSA women's basketball team suffered a 75-64 setback at the hands of Tulane on Sunday in American Athletic Conference action inside the Convocation Center. Despite the result, redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman logged her third double-double of the year, scoring 21 points and collecting 12 rebounds.

The Roadrunners (11-10, 5-5 The American) fell to the Green Wave (10-11, 3-7 The American), as Colemans 21 points came at a 47.4% clip. Joining her in posting double-digit scoring figures, freshman Aysia Proctor dropped 14, including three triples, while sophomore Sidney Love scored 10.

UTSA will be back in action next Sunday, with a 1 PM CST matchup against UAB at the Convo for the squad's annual Cancer Awareness game.

🔼 The Finishing Touches. The UTSA track & field teams wrapped up a weekend of solid performances, concluding the Charlie Thomas Invitational on Saturday at Texas A&M’s newly-constructed R.A. “Murray” Fasken '38 Indoor Track, collecting 35 top-10 finishes across the two-day meet, including 13 medalist performances.

Go here for the complete rundown on these impressive results.

The Roadrunners will send separate squads to three different meets next weekend: the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston (Feb. 9), David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston (Feb. 9) and Don Kirby Elite Invitational (Feb. 10), the final meets ahead of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 23-24, in Birmingham, Alabama.

🔼 To 'Runners, With Love. Long-time dedicated advocates of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), Brian Tramontano ‘94, and his wife, Kelly, are leaving a lasting legacy of generosity that encompasses support for both the university's athletic facilities and individual student-athletes. The pair began supporting the university’s academic programs in 1997 and have since become instrumental to the success of Roadrunner Athletics.

Brian currently holds positions as a member of the UTSA Alumni Association and has served as the Vice President of the Roadrunner Foundation since 2019.

Kelly Tramontano, although not a UTSA alumna herself, has embraced the university as her own. Her deep passion for sports and commitment to empowering female athletes stem from her own experiences as a former soccer player at the University of Arkansas.

“My hope is that we are able to encourage others to give. Sports are such an important part of any university,” said Brian. “I’d love to be able to see others donate because as UTSA grows, the entire San Antonio community rises with it.”

🔼 What’s Up Next is Shocking. The UTSA men’s basketball team (8-13, 2-7 AAC) fought its way back from a 16-point deficit in the second half against Rice (9-13, 3-7 AAC), closing the gap to just a single possession in the final minute of Saturday’s conference rematch at the Convocation Center. Trailing just four in the closing seconds after erasing a double-digit deficit, the Roadrunners couldn’t find the bottom of the basket to finish the comeback, falling to the Owls, 80-76, and splitting the series on the year.

The Roadrunners travel north to face a new AAC foe, squaring off with the Wichita State Shockers on Feb. 7. Next on the slate is a nationally televised home date with East Carolina on Feb. 10 at the Convocation Center, to be aired on ESPNU.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2004

The UTSA Roadrunners lost to the then-undefeated Wichita State Shockers by only five points after an epic hardwood battle in front of a sellout crowd of 10,482 at the Charles Koch Arena.

"To play this well on the road against a team like Wichita State certainly gives us hope for the future," said then-UTSA coach Tim Carter after the game. "We challenged Anthony (Fuqua) to be more offensive-minded in this game, and he certainly responded and was able to keep us in this game."

🤙🏼 Have a great Monday, y’all!
