🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. The UTSA women’s golf team travels to The Bahamas to play in the Nexus Collegiate, which will be held today through Wednesday (Feb. 12-14) at Albany Golf Club (par 72/6,544 yards) located on the island of New Providence.

In what will mark the program’s second international trip and first visit to The Bahamas, the Roadrunners will feature a lineup of Camryn Carreon, Morgan Ellison, Daniela Abonce, Federica Tavelli Westerlund and Olivia Williams, while Maria Bastarrica will compete as an individual.

The Roadrunners are coming off a tie for eighth place at the Paradise Invitational last week in Boca Raton, Florida. Carreon led the way by tying for 12th with a 1-over-par 217 (75-67-75).

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Blazers Beatdown. The UTSA women's basketball team took down the American Athletic Conference's leader on Sunday, as they bested UAB, 76-58, inside the Convocation Center. The win represented the third occasion of the 2023-24 season in which the 'Runners dethroned the league's top team, this time doing it behind a quartet of double-digit scorers.

The Roadrunners (12-10, 6-6 The American) took down the Blazers (17-7, 8-4 The American) after sinking 32 shots at a 45% clip. UTSA also pulled down 13 more rebounds than their opponent, scored 22 more points in the paint, and recorded twice as many assists.

The 'Runners will hit the road for their next two contests, first visiting Tulsa on Wednesday with a 6:30 PM CST tipoff at the Reynolds Center in Oklahoma before battling North Texas on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Denton, Texas.

🔼 Cat’s Out of the Bag. Three-time Olympian Cat Osterman will highlight UTSA’s primary ESPN+ broadcast teams for baseball and softball, which were announced Friday. All home games for both sports will air live on ESPN+.

Karl Schoening and Mike Capps will handle the call of UTSA baseball games, while Neal Raphael and Osterman will comprise the broadcast team for UTSA softball.

Read the article for more on the impressive backgrounds of all four announcers.

Also, don’t forget that baseball tickets are still on sale.

🔼 We Meet Again. The UTSA track & field teams concluded the weekend at two meet sites on Saturday, closing up shop at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston and the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque.

Friday’s results saw four records fall, an international record snapped, and UTSA took over a pair of top spots in the American Athletic Conference event rankings. On Saturday, the Roadrunners added another new school record, another international record, and put forward strong finishes at the elite meet in New Mexico.

Highlighting a pair of medalists on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center Indoor Track, Sydney, Australia junior Gabriel Binion returned from setting the long jump school record with a 15.86m (52-0.5) leap in the triple jump to win the event.

UTSA now turns its attention to the program’s inaugural appearance at the American Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, on Feb. 23-24 at the Birmingham Crossplex.

🔼 Par For the Course. The UTSA men’s golf team will continue its spring season this week at the Bentwater Invitational today and tomorrow (Feb. 12-13) at Bentwater Country Club’s Miller Course (par 71/6,788 yards).

The trip will mark a homecoming for a pair of Roadrunners from Montgomery, Texas—Hunter Bott and Bryson Thurston, who will play individually.

UTSA will compete against No. 28 Baylor, Houston, Missouri State, Nicholls, Rice, Sam Houston, Southern Illinois, SFA, Tarleton, TCU, Texas A&M-Commerce, UT Arlington, UTRGV, and Western Kentucky.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday, and the final round is slated for Tuesday.

The Roadrunners are coming off a sixth-place showing at the Sea Best Invitational last month in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Bott led the way by firing a 1-over-par 211 (71-69-71) to grab a share of seventh.

🔼 Walked the Plank. For the second straight game, the UTSA men’s basketball team (8-16, 2-9 AAC) struggled to bury buckets in the first half and were pushed to shoot their way out of a notable deficit in the second half against East Carolina (12-12, 5-6 AAC) on Saturday at the Convocation Center. Staring down a 23-point halftime deficit, the Roadrunners never strayed from the fight, outscoring the visiting Pirates 48-36 in the second half. However, UTSA could only cut the lead to 10 as the half ticked away, succumbing to the 84-73 loss.

The Roadrunners head out next week for their longest road trip of the year, taking on the first double-road trip since starting AAC play. UTSA will travel to Charlotte for a rematch with the hot-hand 49ers on Feb. 15 before heading on to a program-first meeting with Temple in Philadelphia on Feb. 18.

🔼 Tales From Twitter. SHE SAID YES. Congratulations, Caleb and Allison, on your engagement! Thank you to Americus Diamond for the Love Your Roadrunner promotion.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: UTSA 210 Day was established by the City of San Antonio and the Bexar County Commissioners Court in 2023.

The annual event honors the growth and success of UTSA sports as well as the strong ties between the Roadrunners and the wider city of San Antonio; the celebration takes its name from San Antonio’s primary area code and the “Let’s Go 210” rallying cry that inspires UTSA fans and athletes.

🤙🏼 Have a great Monday, y’all!
