🔼 “Haileys” Comet. As a high school student, Hailey Atwood once ignored a recruiting questionnaire from UTSA because she thought she wouldn’t be good enough to play for the school’s women’s basketball program. Years later, she has been a leading force in helping head coach Karen Aston establish a winning culture for the Roadrunners.

Atwood, a product of Bowie High School in Austin, played two years for Blinn College, averaging nearly 19 points, seven rebounds, and three assists as a sophomore.

“When you grow up in Austin, Texas, you know who Karen Aston is,” Atwood said. “I was talking to a bunch of schools and, literally at the very end of the season, I saw that Karen Aston was hired at UTSA. We had just lost our game at the regional tournament, and Karen called me. As soon as she offered me, I knew where I was going to go because it’s always been a dream to play under her.”

Almost immediately after being hired on March 29, 2021, Aston began getting calls about the 5-foot-8 guard, including from a close friend and from Atwood’s high school coach, Vickie Benson.

“It was a no-brainer,” Aston said. “Every person I talked to, all they said was, ‘If you want to build a culture, you want to start with someone who may not be the best player on your team but will be the best player on your team. She has such a good spirit about her. You can’t help but love her, and you can’t help but be proud of her.”

🔼 Who Runs the World? Girls. This evening, the UTSA women's basketball team will host a first-place North Texas squad in American Athletic Conference action. The team will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the passing of Title IX, with tipoff set for 6:30 PM CST in the Convocation Center. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The Roadrunners (10-9, 4-4 The American) dropped their last two contests and will look to bounce back against the Mean Green.

Despite falling 78-55 at the hands of SMU in their last matchup that saw stellar performances by senior Kyra White and freshman Idara Udo, the 'Runners remain league leaders in several statistical categories, including rebounds per game, where a 46.3 average sits sixth nationally. Additionally, UTSA has held opponents to a 36.0% shooting clip, which tops the AAC and ranks 22nd across the country, and 5.0 blocks per game sit 21st on the national leaderboard.

🔼 Great Scott, Indeed. UTSA head football coach Jeff Traylor has hired Galen Scott as defensive pass game coordinator and linebackers coach.

Scott was a three-time All-America linebacker for the Redbirds and graduated as the school's all-time leading tackler before Boomer Grigsby, coached by Scott, broke the ISU record.

Scott comes to San Antonio from Louisiana, where he was the Ragin’ Cajuns’ inside linebackers coach for three seasons. During his time in Lafayette, he coached five all-conference players and helped lead the program to 25 wins and a conference championship.

This past season, Scott helped guide the Ragin’ Cajuns to six wins and a bowl appearance. He coached K.C. Ossai to honorable mention All-Sun Belt Conference accolades after he led the team in tackles with 95 and posted 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

🔼 Robot? Nah, Hunter Bott. Welp, he’s that good. Hunter Bott posted his third straight top-10 finish to lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a sixth-place showing at the Sea Best Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley (par 70/6,873 yards).

Bott ended up with a share of seventh place by firing a 1-over-par 211 during the 54-hole event. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, entered the day in the top 10 after posting an even-par 140 (71-69) on Monday. He carded a 1-over 71 that featured back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 en route to turning in his eighth career top 10.

This marked UTSA’s third straight and fourth overall top-10 team finish of the 2023-24 season.

The Roadrunners will return to the course on Feb. 12-13 when they travel to Montgomery, Texas, for the Bentwater Invitational.
