🔼The UTSA Springboard For Success. Niaga Mitchell-Cole moved to San Antonio with her family before her freshman year of high school, and she’s never left.

Mitchell-Cole lettered for the Roadrunners women’s basketball program from 2013-16 and gained important experience at UTSA both in the classroom and on the court, setting her up for a highly successful career after sports. She currently works as a compensation analyst for SWBC, an international financial services company, headquartered in San Antonio.

“UTSA has done a lot of good for me,” Mitchell-Cole said. “It’s kind of cliché but I learned how to be a team player.”

Read the feature on Mitchell-Cole for more on her decision to play hoops at UTSA, Assistant AD for Life Skills Stefanie Cisneros’ role in her success, and the Roadrunner friendships she still maintains.

🔼Think You Have to Wait ‘Til August For Football? Think again. Head coach Jeff Traylor and senior student-athletes Oscar Cardenas and Jamal Ligon will represent UTSA at the 2024 American Athletic Conference Kickoff, which will be held Monday and Tuesday, July 22-23, at Loews Arlington.

For the first time, The American is inviting a limited number of fans to experience the 2024 Kickoff in person and gain unprecedented access to players and coaches. Fans will have the opportunity to sit in on press conferences, take part in photo opportunities, and enjoy meet-and-greets with the student-athletes and coaches.

Fans who wish to attend the 2024 Kickoff can register at TheAmerican.org/AACKickoff.

🔼A Well-Oiled Machine. On Monday, UTSA women's basketball coach Karen Aston announced the addition of Elyssa Coleman to the 2024-25 coaching staff as she takes over the Director of Operations position following a standout playing career.

"I am thrilled to have Elyssa join our staff," said Coach Aston." She has proven to be dependable and committed to helping move the needle for our program. I love that she wants to continue to learn the business and feed into our program."

One of UTSA's best in the Aston era, Coleman recently helped UTSA go 18-15 and led the 'Runners to their inaugural postseason victory via an 80-62 routing of Northern Colorado in the Opening Round of the WNIT.

🔼Off and Running. The UTSA track & field program has been honored with team and individual academic accolades from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA).

Both men's and women's squads were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams, which requires a cumulative GPA for all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA squad list for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field of 3.0 or higher. The women boasted a 3.44 team GPA, and the men posted a 3.07 team GPA.

In addition, 10 Roadrunners received honors as USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes, with six from the women’s team and four from the men’s.

🔼This One Goes Out to the Right-Brained ‘Runners. This summer, UTSA Athletics has been profiling its numerous areas to provide an inside look into how each unit serves Roadrunners’ student-athletes.

In this edition, we spoke with Katie Meyers, the Assistant Athletics Director for Creative Services, about the Creative Services unit.

Q: How does your department service UTSA student-athletes?

Katie Meyers: “The UTSA Athletics Creative Services department is tasked with elevating the visibility of our UTSA student-athletes by promoting their achievements both on and off the field, providing content for their personal platforms and telling their stories.”

🔼Inaugural IKEA Partnership. IKEA Live Oak has joined UTSA Athletics as a corporate partner, marking the first partnership between IKEA and a collegiate athletics department.

Elements of the partnership include sponsoring the student shuttle to UTSA Football games. IKEA Live Oak signage will be at both the campus and Alamodome pick-up and drop-off locations. For select games, the shuttle will feature an IKEA Live Oak wrap. IKEA Live Oak will also sponsor the net tape for the UTSA Volleyball program.
