Brew-1-0 3/4: Don't Sleep on Roadrunner Hoops

UTSA men's and women's basketball snagged two huge and timely wins over the weekend

🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. Combining for 56 points, Jordan Ivy-Curry and PJ Carter took center stage in Saturday’s slugfest at Moody Coliseum, leading the UTSA men’s basketball team (11-19, 5-12 AAC) to a 77-73 upset victory at SMU (19-10, 10-6 AAC).

With the win, the Roadrunners notched their third straight victory and handed the Mustangs their third loss at home this season – snapping SMU’s nine-game home win streak. Stangs a bit, eh?

UTSA is quickly rising in the AAC rankings at the right time, heading into a short break and a Senior Day rematch against Temple on March 10 before heading to Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena for the AAC Championships, kicking off March 13.

🔼 Shocker? Not Really. Not to be outdone by MBB, Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman logged a double-double, and sophomore Siena Guttadauro charted a career-high 13 points as UTSA took down Wichita State, 68-61, in American Athletic Conference action.

Senior Jordyn Jenkins dropped a team-high 17 points with six boards, while classmate Kyra White scored seven with four rebounds and five assists.

With the win, UTSA cemented their first regular season with a winning record since the 2014-15 team went 16-14 before failing in the opening round of the C-USA tournament.

UTSA will wrap up the regular season at home as they meet Rice on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center.

🔼 Can’t-Miss Convo News. The UTSA volleyball team is set to take on the two-time defending national champion Texas Longhorns in a special spring exhibition match at the Convocation Center this evening at 7 PM CST, with doors opening at 6:15. It is sold out to the general public. However, the first 250 students at the Convo with a valid UTSA student ID will receive free entry.

Those who have already purchased tickets may view and manage them through the UTSA Roadrunners app or at goUTSA.com/accountmanager.

🔼 ‘Runners Climb the Grand Canyon. A two-out wild pitch scored the winning run for the UTSA baseball team in a 10-9 walk-off win against Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. UTSA improves to a 6-6 record, while GCU falls to a 6-5 record.

SOME QUICK HITS:

·      Junior center fielder Mason Lytle went 4-for-6 with three runs.

·      Sophomore right fielder Tye Odom went 3-for-5 with two runs and a double.

·      Sophomore Ruger Riojas earned his third win of the season, closing out the last four innings of the game while striking out five batters.

The Roadrunners host Tarleton on Wednesday, March 6, at 4 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.

🔼 Easy Like a Sunday Morning. The UTSA men’s tennis team (6-7) capped the week with another win via sweep on Sunday afternoon, topping UT Arlington (5-6) on Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center and notching a 2-0 week for the Roadrunners.

“Phenomenal doubles today,” said Coach Sergey Avdeyev. “I feel like we enjoyed every point of it. Another step forward with our singles play. I feel like we are getting better with every point. UT Arlington came with a lot of fighting spirit, but our level really shut it down.”

The Roadrunners have just one match upcoming next week, as UTSA hosts Kennesaw State for the first meeting in program history. The Owls (5-2) travel to UTSA Tennis Center for a 1 PM CST match on Friday, March 8.

🔼 Easy Like a Sunday Morning, Part Two. The No. 70 UTSA women’s tennis team registered a pair of neutral-site victories on Sunday, sweeping Tyler Junior College, 7-0, and downing Cowley College, 4-1, at North Texas’ Waranch Tennis Complex.

With the two wins, the Roadrunners ran their record to 9-3 on the season, marking the best 12-match start since 2007.

UTSA will return to the courts at 11 AM CST Friday, March 9, with a road match against UT Arlington.

🔼 No Shanks in the Sunshine State. The UTSA women’s golf team travels to Florida to play in the UNF Collegiate today and tomorrow (Monday-Tuesday, March 4-5) at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club (par 72/6,020 yards). The field will play 36 holes on Monday, and the final round is slated for Tuesday.

This will mark UTSA's first appearance in the UNF Collegiate and their second spring trip to the Sunshine State.

The Roadrunners are coming off a 10th-place tie at the Chevron Collegiate last week at the Golf Club of Houston. UTSA carded a 3-under-par 861 (289-283-289) to share 10th with No. 41 North Texas and UNLV in a field that included nine nationally ranked teams. Individually, Carreon and Daniela Abonce led the way by tying for 25th at 4-under 212.

The Roadrunners (7-14, 0-0 The American) overwhelmed the Tigers (7-10, 0-0 SWAC) as junior Jaylen Prichard, senior Taylor Jensen, junior Sophie Campbell, and sophomore Caton Letbetter all logged multiple RBIs. Freshman Iliana Saucedo (3-0) twirled a gem, fanning seven and allowing just two hits across a complete-game shutout, while Erin Gibbs (2-3) was tagged with the loss.

UTSA will now focus on Abilene Christian, with a Tuesday contest at 5 PM CST representing the Roadrunners' home opener and Most Valuable Professor Day.

🔼 Roadrunner Strong. UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos will be honored by Girls Inc. of San Antonio at its 19th-annual Strong, Smart and Bold Luncheon on March 25.
