UTSA names Austin Claunch—who comes with an excellent track record—as new Men's Hoops coach

🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos has announced Austin Claunch as the seventh head coach of the Roadrunners’ men’s basketball program. Claunch, who calls Houston his hometown and currently serves as an assistant coach at national power Alabama, led Nicholls to a pair of Southland Conference titles as head coach.

“He had great success as the head coach at Nicholls and has gained valuable experience at some of the top programs in the country,” Campos said.

“The potential of the UTSA program really excites me,” Claunch said. “I think we can be really good for a long time, but I don't think it will take a long time to be really good.”

Mason Lytle, Andrew Stucky, and Hector Rodriguez led the Roadrunners with two hits apiece.

UTSA improves to an even 10-10 overall record, while Northwestern’s record falls to 7-9.

🔼 Overcoming Mother Nature…and the Mean Green. The UTSA softball team picked up its first American Athletic Conference victory on Sunday, as they took down North Texas 4-2 in a series finale that was plagued by a litany of weather delays.

Senior Jamie Gilbert pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for the win, and McKenzie Wagoner (4-7) was tagged with the loss. Senior Taylor Jensen delivered a standout performance, launching a long ball. Classmate Erykah Guerrero went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and junior Sophie Campbell had a 2-for-4 day.

This will be UTSA's third time playing in a postseason tournament and its first appearance in the WNIT. It previously made the NCAA Tournament following the Southland Conference Tournament Championships in 2008 and 2009. Additionally, the Roadrunners will be searching for their first postseason win in the program's history.

🔼 Luck of the Draw. UTSA Athletics has announced its 30 Days of Winning promotion, automatically open to all fans who have purchased or renewed their football season tickets for the 2024 campaign, beginning Friday and running through the UTSA Football Spring Game on Saturday, April 13.

All fans who have purchased or renewed their season tickets for the 2024 season will be eligible to be chosen for each day’s giveaway, which you can find here. One winner will be selected and announced each day on the UTSA Athletics social media accounts.

🔼 Humble Brag Incoming. The UTSA men’s golf team will travel to Humble, Texas, to play in the All-American Intercollegiate, which will be held today and tomorrow (Monday-Tuesday), March 18-19, at the Golf Club of Houston (par 72/7,067 yards). The field will play 36 holes on Monday, and the final round is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Roadrunners will bring a lineup of Hunter Bott, Brock Blais, David Harrison, Walker Franklin and Bryson Thurston, while Houston native Christian Rodriguez will play as an individual.

🔼 The Gold Standard. The Roadrunners were on fire on Saturday’s second day of competition at the annual UTSA Invitational, capturing 27 top-10 performances, including 16 medalists—five of whom earned the gold. UTSA saw first-place finishes from Brice Chabot, Dennis Phillips, Dahlia Barnes, Victor Charo, and the men’s 4x400-meter relay.

Saturday’s performances, coupled with the opening day of competition, tallied 41 top-10 finishes and 18 total medals in the two-day meet that opened the 2024 outdoor season. The men’s team totaled 10 of the medals for the weekend, and the women’s team nabbed eight.
