Brew-1-0 9/19: Taming the Mean Green

TGIF, Roadrunners Fam. The UTSA soccer team (6-2-2, 2-0 AMER) put up the walls and leaned on its strength as one of the nation’s elite defenses in shutting down the top-shooting team in the American Conference on Thursday night at the Park West Athletics Complex. Holding North Texas (4-6-1, 0-1 AMER) to just two shots on the night, the Roadrunners secured their fourth consecutive victory on the strength of senior Izzy Lane’s 82nd-minute one-on-one gamewinner for the 1-0 win over the Mean Green.
Giving a nod to the foundation of the program in celebrating the Roadrunners’ 20th season before a historic fourth-biggest crowd of 1,173, the current squad did what they do best under eighth-year head coach Derek Pittman, controlling possession and snuffing out every Mean Green drive into their territory.

🔼 Mountain Momentum. Fresh off a 48-20 home victory over UIW last Saturday in the Hometown Showdown, UTSA (1-2) will close out the non-conference slate tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 20), when it faces Colorado State (1-1) in Fort Collins. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. CT at Canvas Stadium, and the game will be televised nationally on FS1. This will mark the third overall meeting and first since 2016 between the Roadrunners and Rams. CSU won the previous two matchups by a combined 11 points.
Senior RB Robert Henry Jr. leads the FBS in rushing yards (480), rushing yards per game (160.0), rushing yards per carry (10.21), total touchdowns (7), and total points scored (42). He is riding a stretch of five straight games with at least 144 rushing yards, two rushing TDs, and a run of 74-plus yards.

🔼 Going For the Kill(s) at the Convo. The Roadrunners volleyball team is back home as UTSA is set to host the Roadrunner Classic, beginning today, at the Convo. The Classic will run for two days. The tournament includes the UT Arlington Mavericks (8-1), North Florida Ospreys (4-6), Prairie View Panthers (2-8), and the Roadrunners (4-4).
The ‘Runners kick off the VB action against UT Arlington at noon. They will then play their second game of the classic at 7 p.m. against North Florida. For their final match of the Roadrunner Classic, UTSA will face off against Prairie View at 2 p.m.
This will be the Roadrunners’ last non-conference matchups as they will begin their conference slate on Friday, Sept. 26, against Tulsa.

🔼 Opportunity Knocks. UTSA Athletics is a national leader in supporting first-generation student-athletes. Throughout the 2025-26 school year, GoUTSA.com will spotlight the department’s first-generation student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff.
Alexandria Gulotta recently joined the UTSA Athletics staff as an Athletics Academic Coordinator, working with the men’s basketball and track & field teams. She is a first-generation college graduate of Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College and she earned her master’s degree from Boston College.
Q: What does it mean to you to be a first-generation college graduate?
Alexandria Gulotta: “Being a first-generation college graduate means opportunity. Having not only my bachelor’s, but my master’s has opened so many opportunities that I never would have found or qualified for without gaining my degrees.”

Challenge Accepted. Officials from the Jacksonville Classic multi-team event announced the matchup pairings for each participating MBB team in the tournament, held Nov. 23-25, in Jacksonville, Florida. Featuring 10 games in total, the Jacksonville Classic is billed as one of the nation’s premier early-season college basketball tournaments.
Among the 10-team field, the Roadrunners are slated to open tournament play as the final game on Monday, Nov. 24, facing Western Athletic Conference (WAC) foe Abilene Christian. The Wildcats were 16-16 last year and finished fourth in the WAC regular season standings. UTSA’s second game will be the tournament’s finale on Tuesday, Nov. 25, against Georgia Southern out of the Sun Belt Conference.

Answer: 357!
The Roadrunners held the Cardinals to 357 yards of offense, including only 33 rushing, the fewest allowed since limiting Rice to five rushing yards in 2022. Brandon Tucker paced the defense with eight tackles, including seven solo stops. Martin had six tackles to go with his INT, while KK Meier made five stops.
