🤙The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics, brought to you by La Panaderia
Good Morning, UTSA Fam. UTSA softball landed four players on the American Conference postseason teams, the program's most all-conference selections since 2022. Sophomore second baseman Sabrina Wick earned First Team honors, becoming the first Roadrunner first-team pick since joining the American, after hitting .357 in league play with a conference-high 11 stolen bases.

Outfielder Samantha Mundine (.378 in conference play) and freshman pitcher Arlette Hernandez made the Second Team, with Hernandez leading the American in strikeouts with 86. Freshman catcher Brookelynn Meador joined Hernandez on the All-Freshman Team after batting .375 in conference games.

🔼 Tourney Time. UTSA softball heads to Greenville with its highest conference tournament seed since 2015 and the most league wins since 2022, opening against No. 10 Memphis at noon today. The Roadrunners swept the Tigers in the regular season by a combined 25-7 and carry momentum from a program-best 7-0 start to conference play. First Team All-Conference selection Sabrina Wick leads a lineup supported by Second Team picks Samantha Mundine and Arlette Hernandez, who paces the American in strikeouts. A win sets up an evening matchup tonight with No. 6 North Texas, with No. 4 Florida Atlantic waiting in Thursday's quarterfinal. All games stream on ESPN+, with the championship airing Saturday on ESPN2.

🔼 Full Circle. Arlette Hernandez grew up in Mission, Texas, a town in the Rio Grande Valley with no Division I softball program in sight, and nearly quit the sport more than once. But her father's persistence and her bond with her older brother Arturo, who has Down syndrome, kept her going. Every game she pitches, she pitches for him.
Now the freshman ace at UTSA, Hernandez has become the workhorse of a program on the rise, ranking seventh nationally in games started, 11th in innings pitched, and leading the American Conference in strikeouts with 148. She started her recruiting process late, found her way to San Antonio through travel ball, and opened her college career against No. 1 Texas, No. 9 Nebraska, and No. 25 Washington, an experience that forged the mental toughness she's carried into conference play.
Under head coach Vann Stuedeman, who inherited an eight-win program three years ago, the Roadrunners have improved every season and Hernandez has been central to that climb. Pitching coach Mac Morgan, who, as a player, won a national championship at Texas in 2025, calls Hernandez inspiring, and Coach Stuedeman puts it simply: she's the team's most valuable player, hands down.
