🤙The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics, brought to you by Jani-King!

Good Morning, UTSA Fam. Last March was a blast, and now the fun starts over for UTSA women’s hoops!

The Roadrunners open the season tonight at UNLV with an 8:30 p.m. CT tip in Las Vegas. UTSA is coming off an 18-16 campaign that ended with four wins in four days as the No. 6 seed to claim the American Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Preseason all-conference first-teamer Idara Udo headlines a group that brings back most of its regular starters, with Karen Aston adding transfers from Houston, Oklahoma State, Air Force, and TCU.

What else is mixed into today’s Brew 1-0? Check it out below!

⚽ Title Defense Begins
🎾 October’s Best
🤙🏼 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Bright Spots. Mekhi Anderson went for six catches, 117 yards and two touchdowns in a 60-29 loss at Florida Atlantic last night, adding a 24-yard run for good measure. Owen McCown threw for 265 and three scores, and A’Marion Peterson needed only six carries to pile up 77 yards, including a 52-yard burst. Michael Petro connected from 54 and Isaiah Butler-Tanner hauled in a 26-yard touchdown. The Roadrunners head home at 7-2 with the American title race still in front of them.

🔼 Title Defense Begins. UTSA women’s soccer heads back to Lakewood Ranch as the defending American Conference tournament champions, drawing Rice in Sunday’s quarterfinal at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN+. UTSA enters as the fifth seed, the same seed it rode to the title a year ago, knocking off UAB and Memphis before beating Rice in overtime for the crown. Win Sunday and the semifinal comes Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT against the winner of Memphis and North Texas.

🔼 Free Wings & A Diamond Ring. The promo schedule for all 29 home basketball games is out, and it’s loaded. Every game features the H-E-B Sack Race and Raising Cane’s Challenge, plus in-game triggers like free Pluckers wings if UTSA scores in the final minute of the first half, and BOGO tacos at Las Palapas after every home win. Highlights include championship banner unveilings on Nov. 16, a Teddy Bear Toss on Nov. 21, and a Valentine’s Day giveaway where one fan wins a diamond ring and gets to propose at center court.

🔼 All-Around Success. Tamara Luckemeyer was a problem for opponents and a model student at the same time, and she will be inducted into the UTSA Athletics Hall of Fame on Nov. 13. The Katy native took Southland Conference Player of the Year honors in 1998 and 1999, earned all-conference recognition all four seasons, and was a two-time Academic All-American. In 2000 she was tournament MVP as the Roadrunners won the Southland title and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

🔼 Service Above Self. Praise Egharevba has been named a Kay Yow Servant Leader, an honor given to student-athletes who put others first in the fight against cancers affecting women. The senior will wear a special patch on her game jerseys this season, one of more than 60 athletes recognized across all NCAA divisions and junior college.

🔼 Owning October. Enzo Vargas is the American Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Month for October, earned by running the table at the American Individual Championships in Houston and taking the singles title 6-3, 6-3 over Tulsa’s Victor Tosetto. The run included a three-set comeback over Rice’s Rafael Botran and a win over Tulane’s No. 2 seed Daniel Philips to reach the final.

🔼 Welcome to UTSA. Jenny Mainz joins the UTSA men’s tennis staff as an assistant after 26 seasons running the Alabama women’s program. The 2013 ITA National Coach of the Year took the Crimson Tide to 15 NCAA Championship appearances, coached 11 All-Americans, and had doubles tandems win national titles in 2014 and 2015.
