Good morning. The UTSA women’s tennis team battled through an intense matchup with Texas State on Saturday, prevailing by 4-3 over the Bobcats.

With the win, the Roadrunners have won their last eight matchups against the Bobcats, dating back to the 2016 season. UTSA also extends its season-opening winning streak to three games.

"Amazing fight from the ladies today,” said Coach Ki Kroll. “It was a very competitive match, and we overcame a lot of adversity…We are looking forward to working on a few things this week to get ready for our upcoming match against UIW.”

The Runners will return to San Antonio on Feb. 3 to face UIW across town at the Cardinals’ Mabry Tennis Center at 11 AM CST.

🔼 Par For the Course. The UTSA men’s golf team will tee off the spring season today and tomorrow at the Sea Best Invitational, which will be contested at TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley (par 70/6,873 yards) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

The Roadrunners will line up against Campbell, Cal Poly, Florida, Florida Atlantic, FGCU, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Lipscomb, Louisville, North Florida, UCF, and USC Upstate.

The field will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with 7 a.m. CT start times each day.

This will mark UTSA’s spring debut after posting a trio of top-10 finishes in the fall campaign, including a fourth-place showing at The Clerico in its last outing on Oct. 23-24 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Utah took an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. The duo of Alan Magadan and Tomás Pinho opened up doubles play with a 6-2 win over Geronimo Busleiman and Bruno Kenn. The Utes evened the score with a win at court two. Coming down to the last court, Tiago Torres and Miguel Alonso battled through a tiebreaker with Dylan Applegate and Geramia Rossi but ultimately fell 7-6 (4).

The Roadrunners battled back in single play and came within one point of the victory.

Back in the singles lineup at No. 6, Alonso battled through a first set of 7-5 against Rossi. The senior from Veracruz, Mexico, sealed the deal with a 6-2 second set, clinching the 4-1 win for UTSA over Utah.

Heading to Mile High City next week, the Roadrunners will once again face Utah on Feb. 3 at 2 PM CST and Denver on Feb. 4 at 2 PM CST at the Denver Tennis Park.

Six of the seven top-10 showings occurred on the track, including San Antonio Brackenridge High School products and twin sisters Melody Espinoza and Marissa Espinoza in the women’s mile and a trio of Roadrunners in the women’s 200 meters. Combined with seven top 10s posted on Friday, UTSA totaled 14 for the two-day meet.

On the men’s side, Caden Cunningham, who on Friday night became the program's No. 5 all-time performer in the 3,000m with a 10th-place time of 8:27.50, placed 12th in the mile with a 4:19.94 clocking and Victor Charo was 15th in the 800m in 1:56.03.

UTSA will return to action next Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3, when the team travels to College Station for the Charlie Thomas Invitational.

🔼 Some Blips on the Hoops Radar. The UTSA women's basketball team suffered a 75-58 defeat at the hands of SMU on Saturday in American Athletic Conference action inside Moody Coliseum.

The Roadrunners (10-9, 4-4 The American) fell to the Mustangs (10-10, 4-5 The American) despite a solid performance by senior Kyra White, who finished one point shy of a double-double as she hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists.

The Roadrunners’ women’s basketball team will now return to the Convocation Center, where a midweek tilt against North Texas awaits, with tipoff set for 6:30 PM CST on Wednesday.

The UTSA men’s basketball team (8-13, 2-6 AAC) also suffered a loss on Saturday afternoon and was not able to keep pace with South Florida’s (13-5, 6-1 AAC) perimeter attack at the Yuengling Center.

With eight conference games in the book, men’s hoops welcome their first BYE date of the AAC slate. UTSA will next take the floor on Saturday, Feb. 3, against Rice at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners logged an 89-82 overtime victory on the Owls Houston on Jan. 6 in the last meeting.
