VP for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos announces huge investment in sports

🤙 The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. A bold announcement from UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos.👇🏼

“I am excited to share with you that, thanks to incredible institutional support, fundraising efforts and newly identified financial opportunities, we will be investing an estimated $57 million into facilities and capital projects for UTSA Athletics. This includes a new, state-of-the-art volleyball and basketball training facility that will provide our student-athletes with 24-hour access to a top-tier training center.

Over the next five years, this emphasis will also allow us to focus on existing facility enhancements for baseball and softball, including player development centers for both sports, a nutrition performance center for all student-athletes and a covered football pavilion. As the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams in 2024, it is important for us to ensure our opportunities for CFP participation are maximized.”

🔼 A Grand Guest. The UTSA baseball team is set to host WAC powerhouse Grand Canyon on Friday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field. The series opens with a 6 p.m. Friday start, while Saturday’s first pitch is at 2 p.m. and the series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.

All three games can be viewed on ESPN+. Karl Schoening and Mike Capps will be on the call for all UTSA Baseball home games this season.

UTSA is coming off of a big 8-7 win over Houston on Tuesday, in which the team recorded a season-high four home runs and 24 total bases. The one to watch? Broc Parmer is on a six-game hitting streak which includes two multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games.

The Roadrunners host Tarleton on Wednesday, March 6, at 4 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.

🔼 Point Taken. Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced the American Athletic Conference’s 111-game football schedule, including the 56-game conference slate, as the league begins a historic season in 2024.

The 2024 season will be the second in which The American has 14 teams under its banner, and the first with Army West Point as a football-playing member. Each of the 14 teams in The American will play eight conference games in 2024.

The Roadrunners will open AAC play on the road against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Greenville, North Carolina. UTSA defeated the Pirates, 41-27, on Oct 28, 2023, at the Alamodome in their first-ever meeting on the gridiron.

The Roadrunners welcome back 51 lettermen, including 16 starters, and are coming off 9-4 campaign that saw them claim the first bowl win in program history with a 35-17 victory over Marshall in the 2023 Frisco Bowl.

Fans can purchase season tickets online or by calling the UTSA Ticket Office at 210-458-UTSA (8872) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday excluding holidays. Current UTSA football season-ticket holders may renew their tickets by logging into their UTSA Account Manager.

🔼 Treys For Days. Fed by a conference record-tying delivery from Christian Tucker, it was raining threes for the Roadrunners on Wednesday night at the Convo, as the UTSA men’s basketball team (10-19, 4-12 AAC) drained 14 three-pointers, including 11 in the first half, and ran away with an 89-73 victory over Tulsa (14-14, 5-11 AAC) in late-season American Athletic Conference action.

UTSA shot 42 percent (14-of-33) from long distance and 44 percent (28-of-63) overall while rocking the Golden Hurricane in the league rematch for their second straight win.

Jordan Ivy-Curry snagged double figures with 20 points, dropping in a trio of three-pointers and going 7-for-10 at the free-throw line.

The Roadrunners will hit the road to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to meet SMU at 2 PM CST on Saturday, March 2, and will close out the regular season back at the Convocation Center on a Senior Day rematch with Temple on Sunday, March 10, at 2 PM CST.

Last weekend at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Breigan (Fredrikstad, Norway) not only won the women’s long jump, but she also set a new meet record after slipping behind following the fourth flight. Exceeding the challenge, the UTSA freshman added a full four inches (0.1m) to her fifth jump to win the title as a rookie with an NCAA-qualifying leap of 6.58m (21-7.25) – breaking her own AAC, UTSA and Norwegian National Indoor records by 2.5 inches in the process.

Breigan was named the AAC Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the meet and was twice named AAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week in three regular season appearances this year.

Seeded third, Breigan will represent the Roadrunners at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9.

🔼 Holding Court at Home. Making its first appearance at the UTSA Tennis Center this season, the UTSA men’s tennis team (4-7) will host Mountain West foe No. 60 Utah State (8-1) on Friday and WAC opponent UT Arlington (5-4) on Sunday. The Roadrunners opened the season with 11 consecutive matches away from San Antonio and are kicking off a nine-match homestand that extends into mid-April.

UTSA will open its home slate at 1 p.m. today at the UTSA Tennis Center. On Sunday, March 3, the Roadrunners will take the court against UT Arlington at 11 a.m.

There will be no live video from this week’s matches, but the Roadrunners will have live stats from both matches at the following links:
