đŸ€™ The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning. The UTSA men’s basketball team (7-8, 1-1 AAC) erased a 10-point deficit to rally past Rice (6-9, 0-2 AAC) in overtime on Saturday at the St. Thomas’ Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center.

After Jordan Ivy-Curry hit a pair of free throws that tied it with 3.1 seconds remaining in regulation, Isaiah Wyatt’s steal and full-court drive sealed it in overtime for the Roadrunners to capture an 89-82 victory in the program’s inaugural American Athletic Conference win.

The win edges UTSA out to a 13-10 lead in the series, ahead of the Owls’ Feb. 3 return trip to the Convocation Center.

đŸ”Œ Lots of Love for Linguard’s Long Ball. Seven-footer Carlton Linguard Jr. changed the face of Saturday’s game early, forcing Rice to adjust defenses as the senior center knocked down three of his first four from long range. Linguard’s effort, combined with three long-shots from Dre Fuller Jr. and another from Christian Tucker, built out a game-high 11-point lead with 8:57 before the half on a Trey Edmonds second-chance score.

Linguard went 8-for-13 with 4-for-8 from three to score a career-high 24 points with four rebounds. Fuller also went 8-for-17 with 5-for-9 from three to score 23 points with three steals and four rebounds. The duo secured the second occasion this season for UTSA with two 20-point scorers. Ivy-Curry finished with 15 thanks to a necessary 8-of-9 shooting at the line, adding in seven rebounds and four assists. Topping an 18-assist team effort by the Roadrunners, Tucker scored 10 with seven assists.

The win edges UTSA out to a 13-10 lead in the series, ahead of the Rice Owls’ Feb. 3 return trip to the Convocation Center.

UTSA will head back out on the road early next week for the toughest matchup of the early season, heading to the FedEx Forum to take on 15th-ranked Memphis. The 12-2 Tigers are set to face SMU on Sunday at home. UTSA’s next appearance at the Convo is another ESPNU contest, squaring off with Charlotte on Jan. 13.

đŸ”Œ Hoop, Hoop Hooray. More good news for ‘Runners basketball, this time from WBB. Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman dropped a career-high in both points and rebounds, scoring 32 and snagging 19 boards to help UTSA take down Wichita State, 74-60, in what represented the Roadrunner's inaugural American Athletic Conference victory on Saturday in the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners (7-7, 1-2 AAC) led wire-to-wire against the Shockers (5-10, 1-2 AAC) as Coleman became the first member of the squad to record over 15 rebounds since Yuliyana Valcheva accomplished the feat against FIU on Feb. 6, 2021. She also represented the first 'Runner to score over 30 points since senior Jordyn Jenkins dropped 33 in a matchup with FIU on Feb. 25, 2024. In the process, Coleman registered her first double-double of the season, going 14-for-20 from the field and adding three blocks and a steal to her stat line.

Also delivering a solid performance, sophomore Sidney Love charted 16 points for her eighth double-digit scoring performance of the season, recording six assists and two steals. Meanwhile, senior Kyra White scored 12, hauled in nine rebounds, and dished out eight dimes.

As a team, UTSA recorded 12 more rebounds than the opposition, helping achieve 24 second-chance points and 36 points in the paint.

UTSA will now hit the road again, this time visiting Florida Atlantic with a 6 p.m. C.T. start time inside FAU Arena in Boca Raton, Florida.

đŸ”Œ Softball, Stuedeman Style. UTSA softball coach Vann Stuedeman officially announced the 2024 schedule on Friday, with the Roadrunners set to embark on a 57-game regular season, including 16 contests inside the friendly confines of Roadrunner Field. The squad will battle in four tournaments before hosting Abilene Christian in their home opener on Mar. 5.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Tesha Smith

The school record for most points scored in a UTSA women’s basketball game is 41, and it was set by Tesha Smith against Florida Atlantic on February 25, 2017. Elyssa Coleman was surely close behind with the 32 points she scored for UTSA women’s basketball on Saturday!

đŸ€™đŸŒ Have a great Monday, y’all!
