Late surge gives men's hoops 64-62 the road win over the Mean Green

Good morning. The UTSA men’s basketball team (9-19, 3-12 AAC) worked together to finish off a tough defensive effort in a win over North Texas (14-12, 7-7 AAC) on Saturday, notching the first Roadrunners’ win at The Super Pit since 2015. UTSA is 5-2 against North Texas in all sports during the 2023-24 season.

After falling behind early, the Roadrunners took the lead for a total of 4:22 in the closing moments of the second half, enough to hand the Mean Green a 64-62 loss in the nationally televised AAC game.

It was a game with players rising to the challenge when needed. Jordan Ivy-Curry put up 16 points in the first half to keep UTSA in it, finishing with a game-high 21 points highlighted by 5-for-8 perimeter shooting, in addition to eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Carlton Linguard Jr. went 5-for-8 for 13 points with six rebounds and three blocks, while Dre Fuller Jr. hit 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for 12 points that sparked UTSA down the line.

The new week brings the rematch with Tulsa to the Convo on Greek Night—Feb. 28.—followed by a road swing back to the Dallas Metroplex to meet SMU on March 2.

🔼 On Your Mark. The UTSA track & field teams wrapped up the program’s first AAC Indoor Championships on Saturday with a top-3 conference win for the 21st consecutive year.

Closing out a successful inaugural appearance, the Roadrunners notched 12 scoring performances, including five more medals earned – bringing the weekend’s hardware total to 10. In addition, UTSA athletes garnered two of the meet’s top honors, as Ida Breigan was named Women’s Freshman of the Year, and Gabriel Binion was one of three named Men’s Most Valuable Performer.

Qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be headed to The Track at New Balance in Boston for the Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9 competition. The rest will focus on the coming outdoor season, which kicks off in the friendly confines of the Park West Athletics Complex, as the Roadrunners host the UTSA Invitational from Friday, March 15, to Saturday, March 16.

🔼 A True High Note. Senior Kyra White tied her career-high with 23 points, and freshman Idara Udo logged a double-double as the UTSA women’s basketball team breezed past Florida Atlantic, 76-60, in American Athletic Conference action inside the Convocation Center. Additionally, the Senior Day victory saw the ‘Runners secure their 14th win of the season, the most since the 2016-17 campaign. 

The Roadrunners (14-12, 8-7 The American) bested the Owls (11-8, 3-3 The American) as White went 9-for-18 from the field, including five three-pointers. 

UTSA next hits the road, traveling to Memphis, Tennessee, to face the Tigers at 7 PM CST on Wednesday inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse. 

🔼 News From the Fore!-Front. Paced by 5-under-par scorecards from Hunter Bott and Jack Wehman, the UTSA men’s golf team posted its best score of the season in the opening round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate, which teed off Sunday at TPC Dorado Beach’s Sugarcane Course (par 72/7,112 yards).

Bott and Wehman each carded a 67 to settle into a tie for eighth place and help the Roadrunners turn in a 10-under 278, good for sole possession of seventh in the 17-team field. UTSA’s opening-round tally, which was buoyed by a tournament-high four eagles, is tied for the ninth-best team score in program history, and it marks the best round since a 277 at the 2022 Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.

UTSA is one stroke ahead of Butler and two in front of a tie for ninth between George Mason and Valparaiso. The Roadrunners are only one shot out of a tie for fifth between Illinois State and Kent State in the team standings led by host UNC Greensboro (-18).

The second round is slated for today.

🔼 It’s a Par-Tee. The UTSA women’s golf team will return to action today and tomorrow, Feb. 26-27, at the Chevron Collegiate, which will be contested at the Golf Club of Houston (par 72/6,171 yards).

UTSA will compete against host and 29th-ranked Houston, Furman, Illinois, Indiana, No. 48 Iowa State, No. 44 Maryland, No. 41 North Texas, No. 33 Oklahoma State, No. 34 SMU, TCU, No. 38 Tennessee, No. 14 Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech, No. 37 Tulsa and UNLV.

The field will play 36 holes today, and the final round is slated for Tuesday. The individual champion will be given a place in the Chevron Championship Pro-Am and an invitation to the pairings party.

UTSA is coming off its first-ever trip to The Bahamas earlier this month. Camryn Carreon tied for seventh place with a 2-over-par 218 (78-71-69) to log her 17th career top-10 finish and help lead the Roadrunners to ninth place at the Nexus Collegiate on Feb. 12-14.

Despite rainy conditions for the season finale, the Roadrunners caught fire early in the second half to amp up the pressure and score twice to down the Owls. The UTSA defense recorded its eighth shutout of the season and capped off a pair of season defensive statistical records.
