UTSA Football seeks to remain undefeated in the Battle of I-35 in Saturday's game at Texas State

🤙The Official Newsletter For UTSA Athletics

Good morning, Roadrunners Fam. UTSA and Texas State will renew the I-35 Showdown on Saturday, Sept. 7, in San Marcos. Kickoff is set for 3 PM CST at UFCU Stadium. The Roadrunners have won all five previous meetings with the Bobcats, including a 20-13 victory last year at the Alamodome and a 51-48 double-overtime thriller in 2020 in what was head coach Jeff Traylor’s UTSA debut.

The Roadrunners are coming off a 28-16 home win over Kennesaw State in the season opener last Saturday.

UTSA men’s basketball is tipping off a new era with the inaugural season under head coach Austin Claunch. Announced as the program’s seventh head coach in March, Claunch arrived in San Antonio after finishing Alabama’s historic run to the Final Four as a member of the Crimson Tide staff.

Karen Aston, head UTSA women’s basketball coach, enters her fourth season after an incredibly successful 2023-24 campaign that saw the team go 18-15, collect the program's most wins, and earn the first national postseason berth since the 2008-09 campaign.

🔼 Convening at the Convo. On Friday and Saturday, the UTSA volleyball team will host the UTSA Invitational, which will see Holy Cross, Abilene Christian, and UIW all head to the Convocation Center.

The ‘Runners will face Holy Cross on Friday at 10 AM CST, ahead of a 7 PM Educator’s Appreciation contest with Abilene Christian. A Hometown Heroes matchup with UIW will conclude the tournament at 2 PM on Saturday.

🔼 Soul Food. The impact that a supporter can make in a UTSA student-athlete’s life has the potential to change their trajectory long-term.

That’s precisely what Christie Waterman, a long-time UTSA Athletics supporter, is committed to doing. Waterman, a nurse practitioner, and her husband Andrew, President of Waterman Construction, are members of the Spurs Club at the Victory Capital Performance Center, which gave her the idea of helping student-athletes more holistically.

Waterman had the idea of bringing together UTSA student-athletes in the Victory Capital Performance Center. This summer, players from UTSA’s volleyball and women’s basketball teams gathered to learn from the center’s staff about nutrition and mental health in an event called Nourish to Flourish.

🔼 McWinner! UTSA sophomore Owen McCown has been named the Manning Award QB of the Week for his performance in the season-opening victory over Kennesaw State.

McCown earned the weekly honor in the Allstate Sugar Bowl's online fan voting contest after being named on Tuesday as one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week along with Drew Allar (Penn State), Carson Beck (Georgia), Josh Hoover (TCU), Kyle McCord (Syracuse), Chandler Morris (North Texas), Diego Pavia (Vanderbilt) and Cam Ward (Miami).

Njie comes to San Antonio after two seasons at SMU, where he played in 38 games for the Mustangs. At 6-foot-11, 250 pounds, the Centerville, Ohio, big man started his career at Eastern Michigan, where he started 25 of 28 games while shooting 61.9 percent for 6.6 points per game and reaching double-figures in seven contests.

🔼 Staffed Up. On Monday, UTSA women's basketball coach Karen Aston announced additions to the coaching staff, Angel Almaguer and Christian Hyde, ahead of the 2024-25 season. Almaguer has been elevated to assistant coach, while Hyde takes over as the team's graduate assistant.

The two round out a 2024-25 women's basketball staff that includes Jamie Carey as Associate Head Coach, Cameron Miles as Assistant Coach / Coordinator of Scouting, Chantel Govan as Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator, Sophia Ramos as Assistant Coach, and Elyssa Coleman as Director of Operations.
