Brew-1-0 5/8: A Rowdy Time, Indeed

UTSA Athletics honored student-athletes for academic + athletic successes at the annual Rowdys

Good morning, Roadrunners Fam. UTSA Athletics honored its student-athletes for their academic and athletic successes at The Rowdys annual awards show on Sunday night. The experience was complete with a “blue carpet” entrance for photos, a pre-show reception, and the awards ceremony with the Roadrunners taking over SeaWorld San Antonio for various rides and exhibits all to themselves.

The show featured a few special presentations, most notably one that honored Track & Field’s local freshman twins, Marissa and Melody Espinoza, with the Joey Longoria Inspiration Award for their perseverance through the greatest hardships to achieve their dreams as DI college student-athletes.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 A Dynamic Duo. UTSA sophomore Daniela Abonce and senior Camryn Carreon both moved up the individual leaderboard on Tuesday at the NCAA Bryan Regional at Traditions Club (par 72/6,376 yards).

Abonce posted an even-par scorecard in Tuesday’s second round to jump 10 places into a tie for 29th at 4-over 148, while Carreon also leaped 10 spots into a tie for 36th after registering a 1-over 73 that put her at 6-over 150 for the week. Paired in the same group and starting on No. 10, the two Roadrunners each posted four-shot improvements from Monday’s opening-round scores.

The final round is slated for today, with Abonce and Carreon both teeing off from No. 1 at 9:40 AM CST.

🔼 Prestige From the Plate. Senior UTSA softballer Taylor Jensen was named to the second-team All-Conference. Jensen recorded a .245 AVG on the year, along with a team-high 28 RBIs, eight doubles, four home runs, and a triple. She was issued 25 free passes and maintained a perfect fielding percentage for the Runners.

She'll add this to a trophy case that already features a pair of NJCAA National Championship rings from her time at Florida Southwestern State College, as well as the 2021 NJCAA National Tournament Most Outstanding Defensive Player award.

🔼 He’s All Hart. UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos has announced that Peter “Mac” Hart has been named Senior Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations.

A veteran of intercollegiate athletics for nearly three decades, Hart comes to San Antonio from James Madison, where he served as Assistant Athletics Director for Business & Finance for the past two years. He managed a $65 million annual budget while developing a long-range financial plan to help guide JMU’s transition from FCS to FBS.

🔼 Shockers Incoming. The 2024 American Athletic Conference Softball Championship field has been announced, with UTSA receiving the No. 9 seed under first-year head coach Vann Stuedeman. UTSA will open the tournament against No. 4 seed and host school Wichita State tonight at 7 p.m. (CT) inside Wilkins Stadium.
